Sarah Marshal King love writing spooky, scary stories. In fact, she has been writing stories since the 7th grade and making up Halloween stories, just like we all did, from an early age. It wasn’t until 7th grade, however; that she realized she did have a love for writing pen on paper.
It was her 7th grade teacher that challenged her to do better, or rather to prove her wrong. Mrs. Horn, bless her soul, was very mean to the students and when she would ridicule any student’s paper it would only make Sarah want to write more. By the time 12th grade rolled around, her AP English teacher Mr. Latimer told her she had a talent for writing and encouraged her to actually go to school so she could bless him with her writing. Sarah was absent a lot because of asthma and bronchitis, but with his encouragement, she decided to stop being absent and find a way to work around the issues.
It was her mother that made her realize how much she loved writing. When Sarah was around 18 she wrote a fiction article for a magazine about turning 30. When her mother read the article and cried, she knew that writing was going to be her love forever. Up until her mother’s passing, she still spoke of Sarah’s article. Her dear mother wasn’t into horror, gothic prose, or even romance books but she still supported Sarah ever step of the way. And that is how Sarah chose the penname of her work. All three names are family names, but King was her mother’s maiden name and after her passing Sarah felt it only right to change her penname to honor her mother.
Sarah’s children are her pride and joy. She hopes that one day her books will continue to grow popular even after she is gone so her wonderful children and grandchildren can enjoy her work.
